I think optimism is just as unreal as pessimism. Truth for me is that shit will come and wonderful things will come and shit will come again and wonderful things, and most of the time it is neither shit nor wonderful, or at least only mildly so. Optimism and pessimism to me are just forms of expectation or focus. Optimism is probably preferable because at least you are looking actively for the good in any ordinary or even bad situation. It's got to make you feel better, right? Pessimism tends to look for the one bad apple in the barrel, rather than just doing what needs to be done and chucking the apple and then getting on with enjoying the good ones that are there.
Of course, this is all nice in theory....
